Day 1: Learn to Work with 8 lbs of Clay

Participants will learn how to handle and shape 8 pounds of clay on the wheel. Asa will demonstrate his personal techniques and guide students step-by-step through the process of creating a moon jar. Throughout the session, participants will have multiple opportunities to practice and build confidence in essential skills.

Sunday, June 28th, 2pm - 6pm

Day 2: Refining and Creating Your Final Piece

The second day begins with a check-in, where Asa will review progress from Day 1, offer helpful tips, and troubleshoot any challenges. Students will continue practicing with more personalized guidance, focusing on shaping techniques tailored to their needs. By the end of the class, each participant will create their own moon jar and share their finished piece with the group.

Key Techniques Covered:

  • Collar pulls
  • Knuckle and sponge pulling techniques
  • Shaping with ribs
  • Spiral wedging
  • And more

About Instructor Asa Kalish

Asa Kalish is a ceramicist based in San Francisco, California. His work focuses on moonjars and other traditional Asian forms as a context for dialogue with the material — finding compromise between what the artist wants to make and what the clay wants to be. These conversations with clay have led to a focus on throwing larger forms to deepen the connection between artist and material. During the day, Asa is pursuing a PhD in Biophysics at UCSF, where he develops novel approaches in tissue engineering by applying the physical theories of thermodynamics to tissues as "living materials."
